Employees are entitled to paid annual leave based on their tenure after completing one year of service: 14 days (1-5 years), 20 days (5-15 years), and 26 days (over 15 years). For employees aged 18 and under or 50 and over, the minimum leave is 20 days. Turkey also observes several national and religious holidays annually.
Female employees are entitled to 16 weeks of maternity leave (8 weeks before and 8 weeks after childbirth). In the case of multiple births, the pre-natal period is increased by 2 weeks. This leave is compensated by the Social Security Institution (SGK).
Eligible male employees are entitled to 5 days of paid paternity leave upon the birth of their child.
Parental Leave: One of the parents is entitled to unpaid leave for up to six months after the expiry of maternity leave. Additionally, working parents may request part-time work for childcare purposes until the child reaches school age.
Other Leaves: Includes 3 days for marriage leave, 3 days for bereavement leave (for immediate family), and sick leave (compensated by SGK from the third day of illness provided a medical report is submitted).
Termination in Turkey is strictly regulated. For employers with 30 or more workers, a “valid reason” (related to the employee’s capacity, conduct, or operational requirements) is required to terminate an employee with at least six months of seniority. Employees are entitled to severance pay (K?dem Tazminat?) if they have completed at least one year of service, calculated as 30 days’ salary for each year worked.
Notice periods depend on the duration of employment:
Less than 6 months: 2 weeks
6 months to 1.5 years: 4 weeks
1.5 years to 3 years: 6 weeks
More than 3 years: 8 weeks
The maximum legal probation period is 2 months, which can be extended up to 4 months through collective bargaining agreements. During this period, either party may terminate the contract without notice or severance pay.
